Sometimes I think the most important thing I have learnt during my years of teaching has been to never assume… When I started teaching maths I would think, ‘Why don’t they understand when I explain fractions? It’s obvious!’ I was falling into the trap that I think many teachers do – that our brains all work in the same way, and we can all learn using the same approach.
Over the years I have had to learn how to open my mind and think of different ways to approach teaching – using games, encouraging students to see patterns and work things out for themselves, asking them how they learn best… So now I find I’m not only catering for the different types of learning styles – whether they learn better through visual activities, listening or doing – but the lessons are much more fun and interesting for all of us!
